Forum Thread: Prednisone Without Prescription - Advice Needed

Posted by: SunnySideUp (Newbie)

Hey everyone,

I've been dealing with some inflammation issues lately and my friend suggested trying 1 mg prednisone. She said she gets it without a prescription and it really helped her. Is this something I should consider? Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

Hi SunnySideUp,

While your friend might have found some relief, I need to stress the importance of using any medication under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Prednisone is a corticosteroid that can be very effective but also has potential serious side effects if not used properly.

Can you provide more details about what type of inflammation you're experiencing? It might help in determining the best course of action.

Hi DrMedic8,

Thanks for your quick response. I've been dealing with joint pain and swelling, particularly in my knees and elbows, which has been getting worse over time. I didn't want to rush into seeing a doctor just yet since it's not super severe, but the idea of self-medicating seemed tempting.

Understood, SunnySideUp, but self-medicating can be quite risky with medications like prednisone. It is crucial to identify the underlying cause of your symptoms before deciding on treatment. Prednisone can indeed reduce inflammation, but it doesn't address the root issue and can mask important signs that a doctor might need to see.

Here are some risks associated with using prednisone without medical supervision:- Adrenal Suppression: Long-term use can lead to adrenal insufficiency.- Infection Risk: Weakened immune system due to suppression of inflammation fighting cells.- Bone Density Issues: Can increase risk for osteoporosis, especially in joints.

I strongly recommend scheduling an appointment with a healthcare provider. They will likely run tests and could prescribe a proper dosage thats safe and effective based on your specific condition.

Thanks for all the detailed info, DrMedic8. I'm starting to see why this isn't something to take lightly. I'll make an appointment with my doctor next week and discuss these symptoms properly. Hopefully, they can give me a better treatment plan than self-medicating!
