Hi everyone,

Ive been dealing with hair loss and my doctor recommended I start taking Propecia (finasteride). He gave me a choice between the 5mg tablet and a 1mg tablet. Can someone share their experience or provide any insight into which dosage might be better for me? Thanks in advance!

Hi BaldNinja69,

Great question! The choice between a 5mg and 1mg dose of Propecia (finasteride) depends on several factors including the severity of your hair loss and personal tolerance to side effects.

  • 5mg Dosage: This is generally considered more effective for stopping and potentially reversing male pattern baldness. Its been extensively studied and has shown significant benefits in slowing down or even regrowing hair.

  • 1mg Dosage: Some studies suggest that the 1mg dose can also be effective, though it might take longer to see results compared to the 5mg dosage. The lower dose is sometimes recommended for those who are concerned about side effects or prefer a more conservative approach.

Its important to discuss these options with your doctor and consider your own goals and risk tolerance before making a decision.

Thanks so much for the response DocInWhiteCoat! Im more worried about side effects but I also want to see some results. Should I start with the lower dose and then possibly move up if it doesnt work out?

Absolutely BaldNinja69! Starting with the 1mg dosage is a good strategy for several reasons:

  • Tolerance Testing: You can see how your body reacts to it before committing to the higher dose.
  • Gradual Approach: If you don't experience significant side effects and are not seeing the results you want, you can always increase the dose later.

Remember that hair regrowth is a gradual process and may take several months to become noticeable. Be patient and consistent with your treatment plan.

That sounds like a solid plan! Thanks for the advice DocInWhiteCoat. I think Ill start with the 1mg dose and see how it goes.

Also, does anyone have any tips on how to manage side effects or things to watch out for when starting Propecia?

Hey BaldNinja69,

I started with the 1mg dose and it worked well for me. Here are a few tips:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help your body process the medication.
  • Monitor Your Mood: Some people report mood changes, so keep an eye on how you're feeling emotionally.
  • Be Patient: Like DocInWhiteCoat said, hair regrowth takes time. Don't get discouraged if you dont see immediate results.

If you experience any concerning side effects (like severe headaches or dizziness), talk to your doctor right away.

You're welcome BaldNinja69 and ShinyHead78!

One more tip: Track Your Progress. Keep a journal or take pictures of your hair periodically so you can compare how it looks over time. This will help you see the progress even if its not immediate.

If anyone else has insights to add, feel free! Good luck with your treatment BaldNinja69!
