Topic: Metformin Discussion - Is it Safe from Canadian Pharmacies?
Posted by SugarFreeSam (02/16/23 9:45 AM)
Hi everyone,
I've been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and my doctor prescribed me metformin. I was doing some research online and found that many people get their medications from Canadian pharmacies because they are usually cheaper. However, Im not sure if its safe to buy metformin from these sites. Has anyone had any experience or advice?
Thanks in advance!

Hi SugarFreeSam,
Welcome to the forum! It's great that you're doing your research before making a decision about where to get your medication.
Metformin is commonly prescribed for managing type 2 diabetes, and it can be an effective treatment when used correctly. When considering purchasing metformin from Canadian pharmacies, there are a few important things to keep in mind:
Safety: Ensure that the pharmacy youre ordering from is licensed and regulated by Health Canada. This will ensure that the medications you receive are genuine and safe.
Quality Assurance: Look for certifications such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and ensure that the pharmacy adheres to strict quality standards.
Reviews and Recommendations: Check reviews and ask others in the community about their experiences with specific pharmacies. This can give you a good idea of reliability and safety.
If you have any doubts, its always best to consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice.

Thanks DocOnCall! That's really helpful. Ill make sure to check the pharmacy's credentials before making a purchase.
I also wanted to ask if there are any common side effects of metformin that I should be aware of? And how do I know when its working properly?

You're welcome, SugarFreeSam!
Regarding your questions about metformin:
Common Side Effects: The most common side effects of metformin include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal bloating. These usually subside after the body adjusts to the medication. However, if these symptoms persist or become severe, its important to contact your healthcare provider.
Effectiveness: Metformin works by lowering blood glucose levels. You may notice improvements in how you feel (e.g., more energy) and see lower blood sugar readings during routine checks. Your doctor will monitor your HbA1c levels (which measures average blood sugar over the past few months) to determine if the medication is working effectively.
Its crucial to follow your healthcare provider's advice regarding dosage and lifestyle changes, as these can significantly impact how well metformin works for you.
If you experience any severe side effects or have concerns about your treatment, dont hesitate to reach out to your doctor. They can provide guidance based on your specific health situation.
